The Mineola Railers believe that once you step onto the Square Dance floor that You are a Square Dancer.
It is our goal to assist you in perfecting your skills as a dancer.
We hope that we can make this fun for you and that you will be looking forward to Monday evenings as the stress relief time of your week.
The first thing most people want to know about square dancing is: WHY!!! ?
Well let me tell you what I say to people that ask me that question. Because you can't afford not to.
You may say that is a pretty bold statement and I must agree with you, it is. The fact of the matter is that most of us are pretty sedimentary, we tend to find ourselves sitting in front of a television set, a computer, or something else along those lines. If I ask you if you were getting your weekly amount of exercise I bet you would tell me yes. But in reality most of us are not. The Mayo Clinic and the CDC, along with most other health organizations recommend 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week, that's 2.5 hrs. Let me give you a few statistics about the physical and mental aspects of square dance:
It is recommended that a person get 10,000 steps/day
Dancers typically burn between 200 and 400 calories/30 minutes of dancing.
The side to side movement helps strengthen the weight bearing bones ( Tibia, Fibula, Femur) and prevents the loss of bone mass (osteoporosis).
Dance can effectively promote good health by improving cardiovascular fitness, strenghtening the muscles, increasing circulation, decreasing blood pressure, lowering the risk of coronary heart disease, reducing stress, and many other positive benefits.
Dancing tends to build confidence by giving a sense of success and achievement when you master the dance steps.
Dancing provides a natural ice-breaker and is a great way to meet new people and make new friends.
Any exercise can raise your spirits by raising the endorphins or so called feel good chemicals that your body produces. This can lighten your mood and reduce the risk of depression.
So that is why I can comfortably say you can't afford not to, for yourself or for someone you love. Besides I just can't bring myself to head to the gym and spend 2.5 hrs or more per week on a tread mill or on a weight machine.
